Every year there is an annual exemption from Capital Gains Tax and in the year 2007/08 your first £9,200 of gains is exempt. In the case of trusts, it's £4,600.

The rate of Capital Gains Tax is, for individuals, either 10, 20 or 40 per cent and for trustees and personal representatives it's 40 per cent.
